Roof Trusses – What Are They & When Do You Need One?
A roof truss is a structure designed to support the purlins and roof on a log cabin. They can be near flat as on a Moderna style cabin or pitched as with a Classic, Cottage or Dutch style cabin. The maximum unsupported span is 4800mm, so any cabin over this size will need a roof truss or trusses depending on the ‘eaves’ length. The standard is a closed roof truss where the triangle (in the case of an apex roof) is solid. You can also choose an open frame truss as an optional extra (and cost). These become standard for gables over 6000m. If you are dividing your cabin into rooms then it is practical and economical to position walls in line with the truss where possible.
