Tony tells us about his fantastic new Keops Classic multi purpose log cabin!

Cabin interior

My cabin is a great success, and as promised, I am now ready to provide you with pictures and feedback on how things have gone over the last 3 months since the Rick and his team built the cabin.

I have learned a lot when decorating and fitting out the cabin, which I have done entirely myself. I guess everyone taking on such a project goes through a learning curve, and that’s part of the fun. But I will mention a few points which may help you when advising future customers with their projects, and hopefully increase their satisfaction:

The cabin fulfilled my wish for a spacious, high quality, multi purpose room with facilities for an office with built-in shelves, work surface (even a fridge!), TV and hifi, seating, and outlook onto decking and a sunny corner of the garden. The 56mm log walls give the cabin a feel of solid quality, and the extra log in the walls creates useful interior headroom. The high precision of the factory machined timbers is amazing, giving a high quality finish to the walls, corners, ceiling and roof.

The extra 440mm overhang of the side eaves works well in appearance and gives the walls more protection. However, this increases the effective footprint of the cabin, which is something to be aware of, e.g. when planning paths to avoid passing under the eaves or under the corner of the canopy.
Sikkens Novatech and Novatop wood stain used outside and inside for the floor and ceiling: Excellent, well worth the additional cost, enhances the grain, and available in a wide range of mix-to-order colours.

It was great to install wiring “tails” in the roof and under the floor, plus take the option of the box skirting. Fortunately I had worked out where the lighting and power points would go in advance, and bought the correct wire and cable clips, so installing the tails did not take too long on the day of the build. Regarding minimising the clutter of wiring to light switches: The light switches are mounted on the walls next to the door (behind the curtains). The related wiring runs over the top of the doors/windows concealed in a shelf (made from left over timber), entering the ceiling in the corners of the cabin. Hence there is no surface wiring visible except where cables emerge behind the purlins for immediate connection to light fittings.
The fan installed centrally works well for both cooling, and for stirring the air when heating (with reverse fan direction). The fan looks right in the high area of the room.

Painting the interior walls white (a few coats of B&Q primer/undercoat) provides a light spacious feel, and looks attractive when lit in the evening. Ikea white roller blinds and curtains blend into the white walls.

Ricks’s building team were fantastic! The timber base and decking were built in one day to high precision. The cabin itself was erected in one further day. Where planks were cut to size, box skirting installed, etc, everything fitted precisely. A problem of a missing window frame was solved on the day, and couriered to the site.

The wider facia board over the canopy and the rear is perhaps a bit wider than I had expected, but I think looks better than the default narrow facia.

Security for your log cabin, garden office & summerhouse

According to Guardien, the UK’s no. 1 website for garden security, 1 in 7 gardens will be targeted by thieves this year. So if you have a garden office, summerhouse or log cabin, you will need to consider security and how to deter would be burglars. If you haven’t already done so, start with making a garden inventory or list of all the items in your garden and put a price to each. You’ll probably be surprised at the amount of stuff you have and its value. This is also a good time to think about insurance and if you have adequate cover. Here are a few security points to help make your outbuilding more secure.

Locks and bolts

Security grilles

Security grilles

It goes without saying that all doors should be lockable. Our standard log cabin doors are fitted with mortice locks and our premium ranges are all multi point locking. There is a huge range of locks and bolts for doors and windows available on the market if you need to beef up security.

Security grilles

Security grilles are a cost effective deterrent and a physical barrier against attack. The lockable retractable metal grilles are fitted to the inside of your doors and windows. They discreetly concertina back making them unobtrusive and easily hidden behind curtains. Available in a wide range of colours.

Log cabin shutters

Window shutters

Not only can window shutters be an effective security measure, but they also look attractive too. Very good protection against vandalism; you’re less likely to get your glass broken than with security grilles. The shutters that we supply are outward opening and fixed to the outside walls and are for use with our premium range of windows that are tilt and turn and open inwards.

Alarms

There are many types of alarm systems on the market, for indoor and outside use and for all budgets. Consider PIR (passive infra red) sensors, garden laser trip wires, pressure mats and wireless motion sensors.

Security lighting

Movement activated lighting is very effective at determining who is prowling about your garden after dark. Some lights have digital cameras and video attached. In remote areas of your garden, solar powered security lights may be a good solution.

CCTV cameras

CCTV cameras

CCTV

CCTV (closed circuit television) is becoming a popular choice for security concious homeowners due to falling prices and easy installation. CCTV works best when combined with security lighting. Many are now wireless systems and be be accessed remotely via the internet or smart phone. Some cameras are activated by motion detection – a good idea if you want to reduce the images stored. Position cameras where they can’t be tampered with, but can be easily maintained. You must also consider privacy laws when installing your system outside. It may be a good idea to discuss your plans with your neighbours first.

Property marking

There is a whole range of property making solutions to choose from, many approved by the police. DNA forensic property marking kits mark with a unique DNA code that is almost impossible to get rid of. Suitable for bikes, lawnmowers, computers, electrical equipment, TVs, tools garden furniture etc. Stencil kits are property marking kits that allow you to mark and protect valuable items. Potential burglars or visitors are made aware through warning labels and window stickers.

pyracantha-firethorn

Hostile planting and gravel

Plants such as holly or pyracantha that are particularly prickly or thorny can be an effective deterent when planted in strategic positions, such as underneath windows or below walls and fences. Crunchy gravel is also good for paths or areas around your cabin.

Ladders tools

Make sure ladders are anchored by chain and padlocked, especially if you are storing them outside and ensure all tools are locked away securely. You don’t want your property burgled with the help of your own tools!

Stay safe folks!

Home & garden offices – 10 great reasons to work from home

If you’re thinking of working from home, then a log cabin office tucked away in your garden could be just the solution you’re looking for. Any of the Keops log cabins you see on our website are suitable as offices. It just comes down to which style you prefer and the size you need. As always with Keops, you have the flexibility to arrange the interior as you wish, maybe divide the space into separate office rooms or put in a store room or a toilet. They are suitable for all year round use, even in the depths of winter (read our blog post!)

There are many advantages to a home or garden office – here a just a few points to consider;

  • A log cabin is an inexpensive means of gaining more space. Often no planning permission is required if you can satisfy the Permitted Development rules.
  • A log cabin office can be much cheaper than renting office space. Its a one off cost and the purchase cost is an acceptable business tax allowance.
  • No commuting or the expenses involved in this. You can eliminate all of your commuting expenses – just take a short stroll down your garden!
  • Tax benefits. Home based businesses can take advantage of a number of business deductions. Check with your local tax office to find out what business expenses are deductable.
  • Eco friendly. Not only will you be reducing your carbon footprint by travelling less, but the wood used in the manufacture of your Keops cabin is responsibly sourced, high density and thermally efficient. Add double glazing and insulation and you reduce the building’s energy use substantially.
  • By having a dedicated space you will be away from home and the distractions associated with it. There is no need to double up on spaces; your dining room will always be free for eating without the table hidden under a pile of papers and your spare bedroom will always be ready for unexpected guests.
  • Flexible hours. Whether you’re an owl or a lark you can work your own hours to suit you, plus you also save time by not having to endure that twice daily commute. You’ll get more sleep in the morning and more time in the evening for leisure and activities.
  • No office politics, which can be physically and mentally draining. You don’t have to be polite and waste time listening to office gossip every morning. You can also cut down on your wardrobe and wear something more comfortable for work, maybe even your slippers!
  • It’s a dedicated space which you can fill with things that inspire you. You’ll also find your peaceful garden outlook inspiring too; you will achieve more.
  • Add value to your property. A house with a valuable extra space or room is going to increase your property price when you come to sell up. A lovely versatile log cabin in your garden will give you the edge over similar properties.

Baby, its cold outside…

Baby, its cold outside…but it’s very cosy here inside our cabin! We often get asked the questions, “how warm are your log cabins, can they be used all year round and what do you use in the way of heating?” Those who have visited us here in Evesham will know that our office is a lovely two bedroom lodge made from 56mm logs with our comfort grade roof & floor insulation and double glazing. I can tell you today it’s a chilly minus 4 outside but in here it’s very warm and cosy. We have a 3kw electric heater (that looks like a wood burner) and a couple of oil filled radiators that are on low in case of frost and that’s it. The cabin heats up quickly to a comfortable temperature and because of the natural thermal properties of the wood, retains the heat all day.

So why haven’t we got wall insulation? Yes, we know many of our competitors say it’s essential; one even states that if a company doesn’t offer it its because they haven’t got the expertise to provide a solution that works properly. This is true for some of the “value” log cabin suppliers who offer little more than garden sheds. However, in our case its because we only use Northern Scandinavian pine which is a very slow growing timber and very dense, with excellent thermal properties. Yes, we can (and do) provide an excellent wall insulation system that meets building regulations approval, and we could’ve fitted it retrospectively at anytime during the last six years we’ve been using the cabin, but we’ve never felt the need.

Anyway, the cabin’s warmed up nicely, the heaters are switched off and I may just remove my cardigan!
